TELEMANN MUSIC FOR FLUTE (Brilliant Classics 2016)

When it comes to performing baroque music, how can one be sure of being able to explore other paths, to look for as many varieties in the tones of instruments and to draw inspiration from so many traditional practices? There are sometimes absurd ideas, at first glance, sometimes disparaged at a later stage, but those that are worth listening to: are to be found entirely in this disc.

Starting with the panflute ! (origins and usage), and about sought-after musical notions: pronunciation in music, nature of rhythm and movement in music, intonation systems, rigging of instruments used. A complexity that Hanspeter Oggier and the Ensemble Fratres roam and revisit with joy and appetite. Let us hope then, that to dare such argumentation will accommodate this blend of means and musical preferences and to work on what makes music: an universal language, strictly speaking.

You will discover all of this while listening to this album and in the more substantiated lines in the booklet; you will finally feel, as in their previous album, dedicated to Antonio Vivaldi, how much the musicians share their sensibility, fire and meticulousness, and present a Georg Philipp Telemann, widely curious and colourist, with a delicate and delicious music. Welcome to this vision of music, coherent and open, encamped on the resonance of the infinite cosmos: a window on another world.

VIVALDI PAN FLUTE CONCERTOS (Brilliant Classics 2015)

This recording brings together a set of some of the most virtuoso pieces that Vivaldi has written for the flute. In figureheads, two masterpieces of figurative music of the Italian master: La Notte, first, evoking sometimes the throes of a restless night, populated by ghosts, sometimes soothing and deep sleep; Il Cardellino, then, where the fluttering flute imitates the cheerful singing of the goldfinch.

Two concertos (RV 108 and 435), built around the tripartite structure dear to Vivaldi (fast movement - slow movement - fast movement), complete this beautiful panorama. In addition, the disc offers two concertos for strings from L'Estro Armonico (RV 522 and 565) and Sinfonia al Santo Sepolcro, whose chromatic writing and harmonic instability poignantly depict the sufferings of Christ. Sinfonia finally responds to an excerpt from the Nisi Dominus, in which the flute, which replaces the solo voice of alto, develops a delicate and moving melodic line, carried by a stubborn pointed pattern of the strings.
